This craft tutorial is inspired by the children’s book Elmer, which is about a patchwork elephant. (You will need to read the book!) This is a great way to adapt a paper craft from a storybook character.
This project requires using a sharp art knife, so you may have to cut out the stencil for your child. The rest of the activity requires your child to cut lots and lots of paper strips and weave the strips into one multicolored mat.
Watch the video to see the step-by-step instructions to make Elmer.

I loved the end result of this project. We framed Elmer, and hung the weave in my daughter’s bedroom!
Also, if you haven’t read the book Elmer by David McKee, check it out. My four-year-old loves this book!
